Need an Editor?

I provide editing services for TTRPG creators at reasonable rates.  If you are a small press publisher or indie role-playing game writer/designer, I would love to help you with your next project.

Navi

To begin with, I offer a free Editorial Assessment of your project. This is a broad strokes look at what I think works and areas I think you should focus on. This assessment is a way for you to understand where your project is at and what sort of editing work you might require. I offer it free of charge to anyone, and it is not conditional on you hiring me as your editor. I would love it if you did, of course, but if after the assessment you decide to wait on editing or approach another editor, I’m still happy to help.

Nathaniel Hicklin

As your editor, my priority is helping your work shine. I approach every editing job with enthusiasm and respect; I think those two things are key to working with any writer. Our first step after the Editorial Assessment will be a conversation, by email, Twitter DM, or Google Meets, to discuss the assessment and establish the scope of the project. If your company has an editing test for freelancers, I’m happy to take it.

I charge by the word, based on the type of editing you require. Prices include the pre-work discussion to ensure you are getting the level of editing you require, editing services, and a post-work discussion to go over the finished work. My rates are as follows:

Developmental Editing

This is a big picture look at your game. Best done as early in your draft process as possible, we’ll work closely to improve quality, cohesion, and mechanics. We’ll also discuss the tone and theme of your game. 9 cents/word.

Copyediting

Copyediting focuses on clarity of language, flow and cohesiveness, word choice, sentence structure, and consistency in terminology, capitalization, and so on. It’s best done after the game is in a good shape but before it goes into layout. 7 cents/word.

Proofreading

Best for games with completed text in layout. A final pass before publishing to check for any remaining typos and inconsistencies, as well as looking at any issues layout may have introduced to the text (orphaned word splits, cut off text, etc.) 4 cents/word

Rates are negotiable, based on your project budget or potential royalty split

Zine Rates: I love working with indie creators on zine projects, so my editing rates are half listed above for zine projects. I loosely define a zine as something that is 32 A5 or 5.5″x 8.5″ pages in length. But I’m flexible on that, so please drop me a note and tell me about your project.

For developmental and copy editing I prefer to receive documents as a Google Doc or as .doc/.docx. I also have a

If you’re interested in hiring me or discussing your project, please use the form below or email me directly at brent.jans@gmail.com and include the type of editing service(s) you may need, your estimated word count, your projected timeline and deadlines, and a brief description of your game. I prefer to work on games under 15K words but I’m happy to consider every project.

Please note, if the timeline of your project shifts after we’ve agreed on work, there may be further delay as I work to meet the deadlines on other editing work. As I usually have multiple projects at once, I need to be fair to other folks who have contracted me.
